Preparing for Christmas as a Church

At JWB, we always welcome the Christmas holidays as it offers a great chance to rest, reflect, and plan for the future. The Christmas holidays are so special to us not only because it represents the birth of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, but also because it reminds the world of the virtues of Christianity which are love, joy, and faith.

Christmas therefore provides a great opportunity, to have a life changing impact on a person’s life. So, it is crucial that as a church you prepare and plan for Christmas beforehand.

In this blog, we are going to explore how your church can prepare for the Christmas festivities and make the most of them.

    Plan Your Special Events

Christmas is all about sharing the love of Christ with people, and what better time to extend love to your neighbours in your community than at Christmas time. Christmas presents a wonderful opportunity to hold special events with a particular focus on the communities in which your church is located. For instance, you could plan to provide food and drinks to the needy in the community. This gesture will be greatly appreciated especially in this season of economic crisis.

Now is the right time to start planning and advertising these events to stir up some excitement and participation from the church and the community at large. Announcements can be made throughout services and also, your social media ads can be stepped up.

You will find that some people in the community may attend these events but not necessarily be part of your church. This again, reinforces the importance of organizing your events well in order to attract new members and to transform the lives of your community.

Update Your Website and Intensify your Social Media Presence

Your website and/or social media pages are usually the first place that visitors are likely to visit to find out more about your church and its events. It is therefore essential to update your website and social media pages with all planned events. People, especially Christians who travel from far to celebrate the holidays, always look out for where they can go to share fellowship just like in their hometowns and cities.

You must ensure that your website and social media pages have the relevant information on upcoming events, that all links are correct, church address is accurate and that service times are displayed clearly to make it simple for those who may visit your website and social media pages.

    Plan Your Sermon

As people hopefully troop into your church for the wonderful and exciting Christmas events, I think it goes without saying that this is one of the best opportunities to provide people with something memorable from the word of God. You could for example plan to have a series on Christmas or have different sermons with a central theme of Christmas.

As you take time to pray, reflect and prepare your sermon(s), just know that the time to start planning the sermon is right now!

Prepare for Your Christmas Decorations and Designs

This is a great time to call on members who enjoy putting up decorations or who are interior designers to give expert advice and help to set up the event spaces and church service areas. They will then be able to help to plan where exactly in the church to decorate with lights and where to decorate with flowers. They can advise on which items to buy and give an estimated budget for the decorations. Take the time now to plan to create the right Christmas atmosphere in your church.

Christmas is such a joyous and exciting time for many. However, it is also a very sad time for many more who may have lost loved ones or who have gone through some type of trauma recently. So as a church this is a wonderful opportunity to bring the community and their families together to hear about Jesus and to experience his peace and love. So, churches should not take this time for granted. Instead, they need to ensure that they put real plans and systems in place to bring in more people during this time and to help them to understand the true meaning of Christmas.
